No, the Mets can’t hit. And, no, they haven’t been pitching very well either. But they don’t deserve umpiring like this. Here is the strike zone map for today’s Mets/Phillies game through 6 1/2 innings:
To recap, Ed Rapuano has awarded 7 called strikes to Joe Blanton on pitches out of the zone and none for Johan Santana. Also there have been 5 Santana pitches in the zone called balls, and only 3 for Blanton.
At least this is not as bad as what happened to the Brewers on Friday in Chicago – in the at bat shown below, pitch #9 from Mike DeFelice to Jake Fox was called ball 4 and walked in the winning run in a tie game with 2 outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning. Nice umpiring.

You call that a mlb you put out there? That's a disgrace to the USA on this 4th. holiday!
Ahh..Umpires. The more I watch them, the more I start to wonder if computerized instant replay for everything wouldn't be a bad idea.
I agree, if this Pitch F/X technology is as good as advertised, then wouldn't we all be better off if we let the machine call balls and strikes?
